Agentic Software Modernization: Back to the Roots
It’s incredibly tempting to let AI coding agents completely rebuild your legacy codebase overnight. But after a thousand modified classes by hundreds of agents and ten automatically increased LLM usage limits, only one thing is clear: nothing works anymore. Zero. Nada.
In this talk, we’ll look at why agents struggle so much in brownfield projects and what language barriers and to-do lists have to do with it. More importantly, you’ll learn what does works when working with agents in legacy code:
- limiting chaos upfront using slicing, seams and sprouting
- steering agents reliably with anchors and structures
- using fitness functions to get agents back on track
The goal? Making legacy modernization with the help of AI agents a feasible and responsible undertaking.
